My high school is distinguished by a special program designed to prepare students to go into careers that have to do with multimedia design. There are four main strands that branch off into more specific areas.
The first strand, and one of our most popular, is video production. This strand focuses on developing the skills of recording, editing, and producing short videos and film of excellent quality. Your first year in the program you start with small projects and use lower quality cameras as well as iMovie which is a basic editing software. The longer you are in the program the higher quality tools and the bigger the projects are provided and expected. One of the main productions of our Video strand is our school news, which we call ONW Now that aires every Wednesday. The students put on a news show with different segments and stories each week. This would be our broadcasting strand of video. There is also the Sports Journalism branch which is new to our e-Comm program. In sports journalism you cover sports stories and do the sports section on ONW Now along with covering stories like you would for a company like ESPN. There is also our Entertainment branch of video which creates our major videos for the school along with researching video production entertainment.
The second strand, Web Design, which is definitely one of the harder strands. This strand works with html code a creating websites. There is also a lot of photography and graphic design intertwined with the creation of websites. This strand doesn't break off into different branches but you continue to expand your knowledge and skills of website design and creation. This is the strand that I am going to go into, and even though it is a lot of hard work, you get to have lots of bragging rights of creating entire websites on your own.
The third stand, Graphic Design, which is the second most popular strand, is pretty much what you think it is. In this strand you will use the Adobe Suite to create anything and everything from t-shirts to posters to flyers. This is a very creative, and a very fun strand to be in as it is pretty free-range. You watch a lot of tutorial and spend many hours perfecting your vector design and learning new techniques. This strand is rewarding because you could design a t-shirt that half the student body could wear or have your posters plastered throughout the halls. You really can't go wrong with Graphic Design.
The final strand, but certainly not the least important, Animation is a world of it's own. In this strand you use programs such as Keynote, MAYA, and other animation softwares to create anything you want into a moving production. In this strand you can make anything you want come to life. All of the animated movies that are out now-a-days were created by animators, and you could do the same! You start out by doing small projects like making dog houses, and work up to making your own characters with their own story lines and everything.
Now the first year in e-Comm, your freshman year, you are in e-9 where you get a taste of every strand so you have a feel for which one you want to go into in the following years. Your sophomore year you pick 2 strands and have both of them as separate classes. Then your junior and senior year you focus on one strand and have that class for 2 hours each day.
I am so glad that I am in the e-Comm program because not only is it a break in my day but it also allows me to have time during school to do things I love, express myself and be creative.

OH MY GOSH. Dannah, I LOVE this. It is so PERFECT. Words can't describe how AMAZING this is. I want this to be used next year so badly. This just proves how amazing of a graphic designer you are.
ReplyDeleteReally nice design. The way the text wraps give a 3D effect I wouldn't expect. It undulates! However, I think has more of a ONW/Raven emphasis and lends itself the school versus the program. Hey, what about ....a planner cover :) Have an awesome and amazing summer!
