Filling the Void of Absent Truth

You know something has made worldwide news when saying one key word can start a heated argument between almost anyone. Ferguson, Missouri located only about four hours from where I live has had a media spotlight placed on them over the speculation of the death of Michael Brown. I say speculation because truth seems to have become blurry with the role of social media in play. We know journalism is supposed to be objective, delivering the public facts about important events and happenings. But when these journalists, which are humans too, let their own emotions and feelings interfere with their work the information piece is lost. We are no longer receiving factual information, but rather a biased opinion. With social media playing a huge part in how we view news today, our bias' are fed by countless others worldwide that think the same way as us. But also providing people to argue our opinion against, as there will always be those. What happens to the news then, is the line between fact and opinion is blurred and the ability to have access to credible information in considerably shrunk. With the large presence of social media in all of our lives, we need to be more careful of what we believe, and use discernment to research for credible sources of information before placing our opinion or bias on one side or the other in all areas of question.
